There is a monthly support group in our area for survivors to be able to come together and talk about what they are experiencing. The support group meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Pocono Medical Center. Co-facilitator, Beverly Baker, lost her cousin at a young age to suicide. "The group has helped me to understand the need for families to talk to their children about suicide and how it affects everyone," Baker said. "Prior to this support group, I often felt that unless someone had lost someone to suicide, they would not understand or have the compassion of being non judgmental. Speaking with other members has personally helped me to shed this sense of shame and fear that this could happen to someone else that I love." The group often has guest speakers that can help to put things into perspective.

If you feel depressed or if you know someone that is, help is nearby. Admitting there is a problem is the first step and getting help is the second step. Life is worth living. Let's all try to stop the statistic of losing a person to suicide every 16 minutes.
